A word from our literacy expert: Debbie Hendriks

‘When I began teaching, handwriting was a priority and taught in all classrooms. However, in today’s crowded and demanding curriculum we’ve seen an understandable decline in the teaching of handwriting. Adding reduced handwriting opportunities, due in part to the dependency on technology, means that when pupils are asked to complete writing tasks, they struggle due to the lack of the required handwriting and cognitive skills.

Research has shown that explicit instruction and repetitive practice is essential for pupils to achieve automaticity and legibility; however, finding the time and appropriate resources has proved difficult for teachers.

New Wave Handwriting incorporates a structured, developmentally-sequenced whole-school handwriting programme with cross-curricular activities, developed specifically to meet the needs of pupils and teachers.’
